What is your teaching philosophy?
"I believe that everyone can be a “math person.” I strive to meet my students where they are at and help them to achieve at their highest level. What works for one student might not work for another. I try to engage with students one-on-one throughout class to get a sense of their struggles and successes by getting to know them beyond our one class together and see them as a whole student."
Can you tell us about a memorable student?
"A student that comes to mind was never really interested in math and didn’t think they were good at it, but knew that it was important, so they took a 4th year of math (AP Statistics). They worked hard during class and even earned college credit while taking the course! After graduation, they reached out with an email filling me in on how they “actually like math now” and even referenced a silly inside joke from class that they still remembered."
What is your favorite part of being a teacher?
"I truly enjoy sharing mathematics with students. When students have the “ah-ha” moments and start to see the connections, that’s my favorite!"
What is the biggest challenge you face as a teacher?
"Burnout. Feeling overwhelmed and overworked. As teachers, we are constantly caring for students well-being while still teaching them content. We often put ourselves last."
